Last clown to go home?

November 26th, 2015

I’ve seen a few interesting designs and paint jobs on cars, mostly vans though, here in Japan. This car was parked in the corner of our lot as I was leaving the university.

It looks a little forlorn out their all by itself, but all of those colors make it look like it’s fighting to stay cheerful.

I’d drive it, no problem.

And, yes, this is a regular university, not the Clown Academy 😉

Some strange things on pencil cases

November 19th, 2015

I have seen a lot of odd images in Japan. Many of them are on t-shirts and often along with some even stranger, text messages. Mostly they’re just odd, or outright funny, but they can run to offensive and profane as well.

This week in class I just happened to spot this pencil case.

Special Guest Lecture and Presentation at Aichi Shukutoku University

November 12th, 2015

This week Aichi Shukutoku University is hosting a Canadian born film maker and speaker who has created a special film about the Tohoku area before and after the tsunami and the tragedy that struck in 2011.

Linda Ohama has had a long career as a volunteer and an award winning director and producer.

You can visit her website by clicking here.

Here’s a photo of the flyer for her film and talk:

Fall is definitely here

November 5th, 2015

I hope everyone enjoyed their break time here in Nagoya and especially at Aichi Shukutoku University.

I know I did. I was surprised by how much I really needed that break. I rested, a lot. I feel great and I’m ready to get back after it again.

Now the weather is turning cooler, and the sun is going to down sooner (no Daylight Savings Time here). It’s usually dark by 5:30 now and creeping up a little day by day.

Right now the sun is shining late in the afternoon and the temperature is around 20 degrees Celsius. Very nice for sitting outside in my garden. But soon it will be dark, and cold, so for now I’ll leave you with this photo taken a few days ago of a lone rose in my garden.

Practice for talking about positions

October 22nd, 2015

In my Explanations class we have been talking about how to express clearly where stuff is as a way of beginning to explain things.

There are some phrases we came up with to get things started.

Here are just a few:

on the top

left

right

in the center

middle

You can also use phrases like ‘to the left’ or ‘to the right’ along with ‘beside’ or ‘above’ or ‘behind’ or ‘below’ other objects or people or stationary markers.

Here’s a photo you can use for practice. You should be able to make lots of practice sentences by using this. It’s great to use by yourself if you have to, but it’s even better to work with a partner.

You can try some things like asking each other ‘where is the airplane?’ or ‘what is below the mat?’

You can also place some items at random on a desk or table in partners then talk about them. Another way to practice this is to give commands to your partner to put certain items in specific places.

Be sure you have fun!
