My new picture

Thursday, September 27th, 2012

I was in class the other day and a student came up to me and said:

“Professor, will you go ‘aaarrghhhh!!!’ and make a gesture?”

I said, “aaaarrrgghhhh!!! of course”.

And she used her iPhone and took a picture of me.

That might seem unusual to some people, but it happens to me, occasionally. I’m asked to take a photo, say something for a short video, etc.

Later I got a message from Facebook saying there was a new picture of me posted.

It was this one:

Me in manga form

I think the app that was used is called Manga Camera.

Anyway, it’s an interesting picture, I think.

If you think so, please share this on Twitter or Facebook  using the buttons below.

Passwords, personal stuff, and protection

Saturday, February 4th, 2012

It has happened again. It’s happened several times already to others.

It Can Happen To You.

Really.

It has happened to me, too. Not too long ago, someone got my gmail password. Not easy to do. I was lucky though. I caught it quickly, and fixed it, but it was scary, and embarrassing, and it made me angry.

Your Twitter, Facebook, email password can be stolen. With that information people can contact all of your friends, pretending to be you.

That’s bad. That’s not the worst part though.

Why are they contacting them?

To get them to visit sites that help them earn money, deliver viruses, or worse, steal your friends’ personal information.

Please take your password security seriously.

Quick tips:

  1. Make it at least 8 characters long.
  2. Use letters, numbers, some capital letters, some lower case, or special characters if possible. Something like 8FiU4#29P
  3. Don’t use words of any kind, not English, not Japanese, not any thing that is actually a word.
  4. Don’t use personal information – birthday, student number etc – yours or other family members, friends etc
  5. Change it regularly.

Try putting together a sentence to help you to remember your password.

If you have problems with your password, or accounts, always be sure to check that your contact email address is still set to your address. (hackers/thieves often change that address so they can just click the Lost Password button after you change it and they (not you) get sent the new password, and your are locked out again)

It can happen to you.

I said that already.

But, it’s important. It’s inconvenient, yes, but not as inconvenient as having your account broken into…

Do it now, okay?

Have questions? Just ask. I’m happy to help if I can.

Wanisan on Twitter

Monday, April 19th, 2010

Set up a Twitter account today for Wanisan.

Someone has snagged the username @wanisan though they’re not using it 🙁

So, you can follow Wanisan.com on twitter at http://www.twitter.com/dr_wanisan For now, that’s what it will be since I can’t think of a better, yet still easy to remember, username.

I’m creating lists for those who ‘follow’ me for this, so if you’re in one of my classes and follow me, please let me know which class you are in so I can add you to the list for that class.

While I’ve set this up primarily for students in my Web English classes at Aichi Shukutoku, you’re welcome to follow updates and send me messages even if you’re not in one of those classes, or not in any of my classes.

We’ll use Twitter for a class room exercise to kick things off. That should be next week, as we’ve got to go over a few things this week in getting the classroom computer system set up for everyone to use.
